Thomas Calder Is making a collaboration album with himself…
Singer songwriter Thomas Calder has been releasing music under a number of different monikers and band names over the course of his career - From Daggy Man to The Trouble With Templeton to recently releasing music under his own name.
In the course of making a new collection of songs though, he’s found a rather obscure answer to an emerging creative problem...
“During the writing process for this new album I was, as always, deep into the heart of exploring themes of identity and the “self”, while also going through a period of trying to reckon with the person I am now. The question of just “Who” was creating this album, kept puzzling me. Should it be Tom Calder? Is it Daggy Man? I kept sinking into confusion: this song feels like this project but, then, that song feels like that one; but I know they both belong on the same record etc.
And then one day it just occurred to me that the answer to ‘Which one of me is making this record’ could actually be ‘both me’s’. And that made me really giddy. For a record that is literally about being at war with the different sides of yourself, it just seemed to make the most beautiful and wonderful sense to have these two projects, which reflect very different parts of my personality, merge”.
“Henry” marks the first release born of this unique collaboration between “Daggy Man” and “Tom Calder” - and serves as a wonderful introduction to the upcoming album. Instantly playful and profound, yet lyrically dense and melodically enthralling, “Henry” gives us yet another fascinating glimpse into the mind, or minds, of a songwriter who is always reaching, growing, exploring, and keeping us on our toes.
